The Sea Horse Anglers Club was first thought of in or about 1967 - 1968.
The name Sea Horse is directly related to the fact that David Garland was renting Sea Horse Cottage on Tankfield Drive, in Paget from Gibby Cooper who in turn rented it from Dr Wilkinson. A bunch of the rugby guys, and including Tom Smith, would come around on Saturday mornings to listen to rugby internationals, on a powerful radio that David had. During these rugby sessions they started talking about fishing as various members of the group had got into it with a passion. They also had local friends who they fished with. At the time there was only two fishing clubs in Bermuda. Bermuda Anglers, which comprised of the yacht club types, and a newly formed club that had just opened on East Broadway, now know and the Blue Water Anglers Club. Someone must have sprouted the idea – “let’s form our own club”. A couple of months later, possibly spring of 1968 a meeting was held at the Police Recreation club. There were about twelve persons present. Tom Smith was elected President. Also at that meeting there was talk of a club crest and agreed on the Sea Horse and a motto underneath "Hippocampus erectus est", meaning “the seahorse is always upright”. Unfortunately the crest was never given a motto. People present at that inaugural meeting included David Garland, Tom Smith, Derek Jenkinson, Bill Parris, Jack Leslie, Howard Marrirea, Hilton Smith and Robin Henegulph, to name a few. The first first prize giving dinner was held at a restaurant on second floor of the Belvedere Building on Pitts Bay Rd. During the next few years the annual dinner/prize giving was held at the Ariel Sands, these were great nights.
Thus is the hazy story of the inception of the Sea Horse Anglers Club, Bermuda. (Many thanks to David Garland for this historical background).
Currently the Sea Horse Anglers Club of Bermuda is a member of the International Game Fish Association and The Billfish Foundation, and has a base membership of over 60 members. The Club usually meets on the first Tuesday of each month at the Mariner’s Club, 22 Richmond Rd. Hamilton.
The mission of the Sea Horse Anglers Club is to promote and support recreational and competitive saltwater fishing in the Islands of Bermuda, promoting responsible conservation of saltwater resources.
